A small scale garden
Garden’s in and so are the flowers
My gardening in the city is on a much smaller scale than my parent’s garden on the farm. Where we had rows of peas, beans, carrots, potatoes, and corn, over a half acre or more, I have five tomato plants, one parsley plant, and at least 9 basil plants in the beds around our house in the city. There’s also some rhubarb that was here when we moved in 2 1/2 years ago.
I bought one pot of basil, fully expecting one plant. My eyes were so tuned to all the plants in the greenhouses that I didn’t notice I had so many seedlings in one pot, until I got home. So I shared with my daughters what I didn’t have room to plant. If all those basil plants grow, we’ll have as much basil as tomatoes. Must learn to make pesto.
My flowers, annuals and perennials, are all planted now and are doing well. The perennials are blooming: delphiniums, coreopsis, bleeding heart, as well as the lovely purple flowers on the scented geraniums. Here’s a photo of the bleeding heart. I love it.
Another week will bring new colour to the garden.
And of course, the new grass is growing— after the voles’ underground picnic in our lawn last winter. We have a trick up our sleeves for next year, but that will have to wait.
