Negotiating Culture
On Friday November 1st, I attended the opening night of an art exhibition at 44 Gaukel Street Kitchener, a space designed for artists to show their work. This time it was a juried show with curator Soheila Esfahani. She selected artists with a wide variety of art selections that depict culture. Thus the title “Negotiating Culture.
One person I know in that exhibit is Nancy Peng, my current instructor at The Button Factory where she has been teaching art for ten years.
I appreciate Nancy’s teaching style and know that she continues to learn. A multi-disciplinary artist, she works in a variety of media and according to the brochure has received numerous awards from juried art shows. Her work in this show is no exception. It’s fine and beautiful and original. Nancy is a humble artist. I appreciate that as well.
“Her visual art practice is broad and varied and includes painting, printmaking, jewellery design, textile arts and photography.”
– from Negotiating Culture brochure
Nancy shared the information about the show in our first class this term. I was glad I could attend. She shared, as a third generation Canadian, that her grandparents talked little about their early days in Canada.
Japanese calligraphy is called Shodo and the characters are Japanese, different from the Chinese language.
I was fascinated by her fine work that combined photography and added painting and characters..
This exhibit is on site until November 10th, 2024.
