It’s easy to forget the viewpoints of little ones when the time of diapers and bottles has passed.When the preschoolers grow up and grow into bigger people.  It’s easy to forget what makes toddlers laugh, the little things that amuse them.

And so this past week and the one before have been spent on relearning those things as my husband and I babysat our two small grandchildren for the two weeks that their regular babysitter was on vacation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

High chairs and tables make great crawl-under structures, and it’s hilarious to put a sandbucket on one’s head as if it were a hat.

 

Blowing bubbles while eating is more fun for baby than Grandma, who’s not used to being  sprayed with food and juicy bubbles, except for mushy kisses. Blowing big  bubbles outdoors and chasing them is fun too.

 

Simple food is best, rather than having  things mixed together. Popsicles drip, but they taste good and  fruit juice is just fine when it is frozen. Cereal and cucumbers make a fine snack, as do the tiny tomatoes growing in the garden. Our game was to look for the red ones and leave the others to ripen.

 

Water play is fun and the way the water comes up from the valve at the water park. The smallest one crawled right into the spray of water, sat up and tried to catch it with her small hands, while the older one didn’t want to be showered but didn’t mind splashing in puddles with her feet. One was soaked head to toe, the other relatively dry.

 

If I said that I still had the energy I had as a younger mother, well, I wouldn’t be truthful. I snuck in a nap whenever the two were napping. We three napping all at once.

 

The two weeks have gone by pretty fast, and though they have been gathered at the end of each work day by one parent or the other, our home still bears signs of two small ones having been here.

 

They’ll be back for a  visit again before long, but for now, it’s time for me to get back to work.
