Write! Canada
Thinking back on my first conference in 2001, I remember being excited about trying something new. There was also a bit of anxiety as I approached Guelph and the conference grounds. That was my inner critic.
I had paid my conference fee, packed my things for the couple of days and decided I would ignore the critic, and on I went. I needn’t have worried about the conference, for I met people who thought like me, encouraging instructors, fellow writers, new to the conference, just as I was.
God Uses Ink was an amazing experience that included meeting other writers, both in the classroom and around the meal table, and learning about writing. In writing, there are things to learn, just like any other profession.
Each time I learned new things, grew friendships with fellow writers who live across the country. People I talk with over email and occasionally by phone. People from whom I have learned much, especially those who have been writing longer than me.
In time, the sponsoring body changed and the name changed, but not the caring and warm conference experience. Yes, there were nervous moments, waiting on the other side of a table as a professional writer gave me feedback on my manuscript, moments before a presentation, when a few butterflies made their appearance in my stomach.
This week, I look forward to another conference. I have different goals this year than the last time. With a book coming out, I will focus on promotion and marketing, important things that will help me in the coming year. I still have much to do to get ready: packing, planning, gathering supplies. And getting my sleep, since those days will be busy and sometimes quite long. This year, I will also host the early bird reading session the second morning, when aspiring and experienced writers who like to rise early, come and share a little of their writing—a story or a poem, sometimes a work in progress.
Only a few days away. I hope to see you there!
