Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands– a breathtaking drive
A bit of fog, but otherwise a good drive
Ooh! Like the postcards.
Another postcard moment.
Here we are, stopped to take in the view, when someone offered to take our picture together.
A lovely drive with breathtaking scenery— mountains, valleys, water, steep dropoffs, but also great lookout places,unless it’s foggy. We encountered some fog, but not so much to spoil the drive or make it dangerous.
I would not want to drive these roads in winter and wonder how far the local residents go at that time of year.
Watch for those hairpin turns and sloping roads, and be sure to drive no faster than the posted speed limit.
In one place we found it hard to stand upright at the lookout, since even that land was sloped. All around us were trees and different heights within the mountains. Overall, it was a beautiful drive for the passengers. The driver gets to look around during stops at lookouts. Two days on the Trail and the scene changes with each turn.
Drive safely, but take the time to stop at lookouts where you can. The scenes can take your breath away.
Certainly this is a beautiful part of the world that my husband and I were fortunate enough to travel to in 2005. True about the roads…gorgeous scenery, but stop and look instead of looking while driving…it can be treacherous!

Sorry for the delay…but I loved the scenery along the Cabot Trail. At one high lookout point, we stopped to take photos [my husband & I are photographers] In the ocean way below us, we thought we were seeing large rocks below, until they moved. I used my zoom lens on my camera then, as we were seeing large whales. We regretted being so high up then. We also went whale watching at Pleasant Bay, but these pilot whales we saw, were much, much smaller than our first discovery. Such a wonderful holiday, we will never forget and of course we have the photos to prove it.
I would love someday to go whale watching on a boat or see them a bit closer. We were pretty high up when we saw those whales swimming around and wished we`d had the binoculars with us.
