Dreaming of a holiday
This week someone on our editors’ list was asking for advice on vacation places near Halifax. I, of course, told her about Lunenburg. Nova Scotia. Made me want to go again. I hope we can do it next year.
I’d like to visit my friends out east, take another trip to Lunenburg, and just maybe take another sailboat cruise in Lunenburg Harbour, like we did last time we went. Almost lost my hat to the Atlantic Ocean, but someone caught it.
The Eastern Star leaned hard as we went throught the waves, but the day was clear with just enough wind to fill the sails and give our f aces a wind-kissed look. I even got to pull up a sail and steer the boat awhile, and now appreciate the pull of the waves on a craft this size. All this time wearing a life jacket, of course.
Next time, I’ d tour the Fisheries Museum and see how boat builders craft their dories, see fishermen tie knots, and watch a demonstration of how to launch a schooner, if they still do that. The tour would be complete with a fish dinner in the restaurant.
Three years ago when we were there, we had a tour of Olde Towne Lunenburg in a carriage pulled by a horse. Trot in Time was the name of the operation. Here we are in the back seat with my friend and her daughter just behind the driver’s seat. The horse looks calm here, even if he was a little jumpy that day. Our driver, who took this picture, had the perfect touch and calmed the horse. She managed him very well. Makes me appreciate how the Amish must feel when their horses are skittish about cars passing them.
Our holidays are at home this year, a staycation in Ontario, with the puzzle of this wet and unusual summer. Perusing these pictures just makes me want to travel again.
Hi there,
What a lovely blog post. I work for Nova Scotia Tourism and just came across it. Thanks for your kind words 😉 I’m only sorry I didn’t read it sooner so that I could offer up some help for you to pass along to your editor.
Lunenburg is very picturesque. In fact I would say it’s one of the most photographed places in Nova Scotia, of course in addition to Peggy’s Cove.
Thanks so much for sharing. We love to hear from our visitors and while we hope you enjoy your staycation in Ontario, I hope you get back again some day!

Oh, we will be back. Perhaps next year. Dreaming of it already and it’s a year away.
Thank you for your comments. By the way, I did offer some information to the inquiring editor, as did other people [including Peggy’s Cove and other places in and around Halifax]. One of the places I directed her to was Lunenburg.
